Two New Cell Phone Collection Boxes Installed at Fifth Third Bank Buildings;
Bank Expands Participation in Cincinnati Zoo's Project Saving Species

Cincinnati – Fifth Third Bank has expanded its participation in the Cincinnati Zoo's Project Saving Species cell phone recycling program by accepting two additional collection boxes for placement at its George A. Schaefer, Jr. Operations Center and the Madisonville Office Building.

The Bank accepted the boxes from Eagle Scout and Seven Hills High School student Benjamin Murray, who created them for his Eagle Scout project after learning about the zoo's successful Project Saving Species program. Project Saving Species keeps cell phones out of the environment to reduce threats to human health and recover and recycle coltan, a mineral mined in gorilla habitats.

Since 2011, the Bank's employees and Information Technology department have donated more than 3,400 obsolete cell phones and Blackberry devices to the project by making it easy to donate using a cell phone collection box located at Fifth Third Center downtown.

"Corporate partners like Fifth Third Bank are critical to the success of the Project Saving Species program," said Cincinnati Zoo Chief Operating Officer Dave Jenike. "The 3,400 actions already taken by Fifth Third and its employees give us hope even more gorillas can be helped by expanding the program and raising awareness further."

The two collection boxes created by Murray are made from cuts of pine lumber, painted green, and adorned with professional Project Saving Species graphics. Employees at the Bank's 5,000-employee campus will now be able to join the Company's downtown employees in participating in the cell phone recycling effort.
