Security Alert – Large National Retailer Payment Card Compromise
A large national retailer has confirmed that their systems were breached and payment card data, including customer names, credit and debit card numbers, and card expiration dates were exposed. Fifth Third Bank is monitoring card activity on customer accounts closely in response to this breach. We strongly encourage all card holders to be vigilant and to check their accounts regularly to identify unauthorized transactions and report them immediately. As is often the case after these types of breaches, there is likely to be an increase in Phishing attacks related to this breach. Be cautious of emails you may receive indicating your account has been impacted and requesting you to enter or verify information. Additional scrutiny should be placed on any retailer related breach messages that you receive in the coming weeks.
What Can You Do To Protect Yourself From Card Fraud?
Consider the follow tips to protect your debit and credit cards at all times.
- Sign the back of your card as soon as you get it.
- Get online statements instead of paper statements that come in the mail.
- Check your statements as soon as you get them. If you discover any suspicious or unusual activity or transactions you did not authorize, report it immediately to your financial institution.
- Be sure any sites you put your card information into (e.g., online shopping sites) are secure. The URL should start with https, not http.
- Protect your cards like you would cash – try not to let them out of your sight.
- If your card is lost or stolen, notify your bank immediately.
- Shred credit card applications you may receive in the mail.
- Keep a record of account numbers, expiration dates, phone numbers and addresses for each credit card in a secure place.
- Never give your credit card number over the phone unless you initiated the call and are dealing with a trusted source.
- Do not store your PIN with your credit/debit card.
- Take advantage of instant alerts that your card issuer may make available, enabling you to track transactions with messages sent directly to your phone or email.
- Check your credit report regularly.
