Security Alert - Bash/Shellshock Vulnerability

Fifth Third Bank takes the security and safety of our customers' personal and confidential information very seriously. Your trust in us is extremely important. We want to do what we can to help you guard against any disclosure of personal or financial information that could lead to the unauthorized use of your account or to identity theft.

The recently identified Shellshock security vulnerability, if exploited, could permit a range of unauthorized activities to take place on a targeted computer system, including the disclosure of potentially sensitive data. The vulnerability exploits a piece of software that is in widespread use in computers and servers.

Fifth Third monitors our systems as a regular course of action to mitigate risks and will take actions to address this vulnerability as necessary. At this time, we have no indication that any Fifth Third systems have been compromised.

Fifth Third encourages customers to monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity and contact the bank should they detect any suspicious transactions. Fifth Third also encourages customers to watch carefully for updates regarding the hardware and software products that you use, including routers. It is likely that systems updates or “patches” for this vulnerability will be made available. You should be certain that any system update you install is downloaded directly from the provider’s site. Links provided in unsolicited email should be treated with caution.
