January 2015 Fraudulent Email Alert

Malicious emails that download malware onto the victim’s computer continue to be a primary method used by fraudsters to steal information and money. Fifth Third is aware of malware campaigns targeting both individuals and businesses. The emails contain a variety of different subjects and content, including information about invoices, issues with a tax return, information about wire transfers, and more. Recipients are advised to delete these emails without responding to them, clicking on the link, or opening the attachment.

Below are sample copies of recent malicious emails:

In these examples, the messages attempt to persuade the recipients to open an attachment or click on a link. If the recipient were to open the attachment or click on the link, malware could infect their computer, potentially resulting in access to their system or in the case of a business, the company’s network.

What should you do if you receive a suspicious email?

  • Do not open any attachments or click on any links.
  • Do not respond to the email.
  • Delete the email message from your inbox.

As a reminder, Fifth Third will never request personal or confidential information via text messages, email messages, or phone calls.

Tips to help protect you:

Education is your best defense – know what to look for and what to do. If an email seems suspicious or questionable, you do not know the sender, you know the sender but this email is not like other communications from this person or organization, or you were not expecting it, it may be fraudulent.
