Comparing Overdraft Coverage to Overdraft Protection

 Overdraft CoverageOverdraft Protection
What is it? Overdraft Coverage allows debits and payments to be made even if you don't have enough money in your account. With Overdraft Protection funds are moved automatically from one of your other Fifth Third Bank accounts to help you avoid being overdrawn. This service is similar to Overdraft Coverage but it utilizes your existing Fifth Third savings account, credit card, or line of credit to cover your transactions.
Do I need to enroll to receive this service? Yes. You have the option of enrolling for ATM transactions and Debit Card purchases. Yes. To sign up, visit your nearest Fifth Third Banking Center or call 1-800-972-3030 today.
How are Overdrafts paid? Fifth Third covers it for eligible customers. Money to cover the transaction is provided with a servicing fee, at the bank's discretion. You cover it (up to the amount of funds available in the pre-designated account). Money is transferred from a pre-designated Fifth Third account (savings account, credit card*, or line of credit*) with a servicing fee.
What does it cost to enroll? No charge unless it is used. No charge unless it is used.
What are the fees if I use this service? There are no daily overdraft fees.

If Overdraft Coverage is used, the per item fees are as follows:

  • One (1) occurrence in the past 12 months =
    $25 per item
  • Two (2) or more occurrences in the past 12 months =
    $37 per item

Also, we think everyone should have some protection from an occasional shortfall. That's why you're never charged a per item overdraft fee when your account is overdrawn by $5 or less at the end of our business day.

If used, the fee will be:
  • $12 per transfer
